Alumni Spotlight – Rishab Srivastava

Rishab graduated with a double major in Computer Science and Economics from the University of California, Berkeley and is currently working as an investment engineer at Bridgewater Associates. Here’s a glimpse into his college experience.

What did you end up studying? What stood out for you in the US education system?

My deep passion for technology and its application to solving complex economic problems inspired me to study Computer Science & Economics in the USA. I was fascinated by the diverse educational offerings that allowed me to dive deeper into the fundamentals of computer science, enabling me to develop strong technical skills while also pursuing a breadth of courses in film, music, statistics, etc., which broadened my perspectives, enhanced my creative and analytical abilities, and piqued my interest in multiple disciplines, some of which I retain to this day. Moreover, the prospect of studying from world-class professors, engaging in networking events, and accessing cutting-edge resources was also something that stood out for me in the US-based education.

What you didn’t expect, how did you make the most of the opportunities?

For me, unlike high schools in India where the focus is often on rote learning and preparation for standardized exams, the unexpected aspect of the US education system is how little time there is, and how many avenues there are to explore inside and outside the classroom. To make the most of my time, I started exploring various clubs that suited my interests, attended seminars and networking events to forge meaningful connections, and participated in internships that enhanced my practical skills. Mostly, I tried to say “Yes” to a lot of things even when they appeared challenging, pushing myself out of my comfort zone and hustling hard to create opportunities.

What are your valuable takeaways from college that you attribute your career trajectory to?

My college journey has helped me see just how important it is to work in diverse teams and work with others. This is the only way to form meaningful connections, work on communication skills, and create a culture of shared information. I have also learned the importance of surrounding oneself with like-minded people to keep up with the constant stream of information and harnessing a deep intellectual curiosity to keep abreast of the evolving tech landscape. Professionalism and a strong work ethic go a long way too.

What role did CollegeCore play a role in preparing you for college?

Collegecore played a significant role in my successful college prep, providing me with the strategies and confidence to navigate this complex journey. From helping me identify colleges and programs that best match my interests to enabling me to craft an engaging narrative around my story to compiling a standout application portfolio that showcased my diverse skill set to giving me clarity about the career paths I could pursue, Collegecore acted as a steadfast guide. I looked forward to the sessions with Collegecore alumna who shared their journey, challenges, and success stories, offering invaluable advice to incoming freshmen.

Any other advice you feel would benefit prospective freshmen?

I believe future success depends less on what you study and more on how you study it. So, take a deep interest in your work, seek opportunities to apply your knowledge to real-world problems, and be consistent in what you do. Remember to engage in extracurricular activities, make friends, move out of your comfort zone, and enjoy this exhilarating experience.
