Demystifying the AP exams

What are AP exams?

AP or Advanced Placement exams are college-level exams offered to high school students by CollegeBoard. These exams evaluate students’ understanding of college-level courses and are taken after completing a corresponding AP course. Moreover, these exams are available for subjects ranging from Math to History to foreign languages.

What are the benefits of taking AP exams?

Taking AP exams offers several benefits that are as follows:

  1. Allows Students to Earn College Credit: Many International colleges and universities evaluate the AP Exam scores of the students, granting college credit, advanced placement, or both to those who excel and enabling them to graduate earlier and save tuition fees.
  2. Supplements their Curriculum: Students in International Baccalaureate (IB) programs or other educational systems who have limits on the number of sciences they can take within their program can use AP exams to study additional science subjects, broadening their academic horizons.
  3. Demonstrates their Academic Rigor: Having AP exam scores on the application and performing well in these exams can showcase a student’s ability to handle college-level coursework. This academic rigor will distinguish them from the pool of other candidates, adding a competitive edge to their portfolio and convincing the college board of a student’s thorough preparation for higher education and their profound dedication to learning.
  4. Saves Time and Money in College: By enabling you to graduate earlier, earn college credit, and take fewer courses while in college, AP exams can allow you to save on tuition, books, and living expenses, making higher education more affordable.
  5. Supports Growth and Learning: AP courses are challenging and rigorous, pushing students out of their comfort zones to think critically and solve problems. This milieu allows a deeper understanding of complex concepts. Moreover, the coursework enables students to explore various disciplines, broadening their intellectual and practical skill sets.

What are some things to keep in mind while taking AP exams?

  1. Start the preparation early because it will give you sufficient time to brush up on the syllabus, practice sample papers, and cover all the material before the deadline.
  2. This approach will help you stay organized and on track with the registration deadline, exam, and important dates.
  3. AP exams are time-bound. As a result, start time management in advance so you can finish all the questions in the due time allotted.
  4. When faced with challenging college-level subjects, ask for help when needed, to better understand the material and prepare effectively.

In a nutshell, AP exams are a great addition to your profile as they showcase your dedication, intellect, and ability to tackle challenges. However, they can pose challenges such as stress, financial burden, and a one-size-fits-all assessment approach.
