What is a Liberal Arts College?

What are Liberal Arts?

Liberal Arts refer to a study of a broad range of academic disciplines such as Humanities, Natural, and Social Sciences, that improve individuals’ knowledge and develop critical thinking, communication skills, problem-solving, and creativity. By enabling students to reflect on the in-depth meaning and value of associated ideas, a Liberal Arts education encourages a well-rounded education experience over narrower specializations.

Unlike a technical or vocational degree, which prepares students for a specific career, Liberal arts prepare individuals for a career in any field.

What are Liberal Arts colleges?

Liberal Art colleges are higher-education institutions focusing on holistic learning rather than one subject area. With an emphasis on a 4-year undergraduate education in Arts and Sciences, these colleges often prompt students to take up courses outside their major and participate in extracurriculars such as community service, sports, music, etc. The aim is to foster skills that will prepare students for life while supporting a variety of career paths.

Unlike large universities, Liberal art colleges have classrooms that are typically smaller in size and have a lower student-to-faculty ratio. This allows personalized interaction between students and faculty and eases getting attention from the professors.

What are some popular Liberal arts majors?

Liberal Arts education is the study of a broad spectrum of academic disciplines including-

  • Humanities- This includes subjects like- Communication, Philosophy, History, English, and Foreign Languages.
  • Social Sciences- This includes subjects like- Economics, Political Science, Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology.
  • Natural Sciences – This includes subjects like Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, Statistics, and Mathematics.
  • Arts- This includes subjects like- Theatre, Drama, Film, Music, Dance, and Fine Arts.

Liberal arts education: US vs UK

While all Liberal Art colleges focus on holistic learning, there are some differences in the way they work in US and UK.

In the US, Liberal Arts colleges encourage students to explore a variety of disciplines apart from their major. They offer a broad spectrum of disciplines such as Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences, to allow students to explore other fields of interest and develop essential skills required in various career paths. Students have the flexibility to design their own course by being able to pick their own ‘electives’. Since most colleges have a lower student-teacher ratio, personalized attention and close interactions with professors become easy. Additionally, liberal arts programs emphasize mentorship and collaboration.

In contrast to this, undergraduate education is more specialized in the UK. Students have less flexibility in choosing their courses as they apply for specialized degree programs. There is also a strong emphasis on scholarships and engaging in cutting-edge research. Unlike the semester system in US universities, UK universities have a three-term year. Additionally, UK universities emphasize independent learning.
